ELLS - European Learning Laboratory for the Life Sciences
The European Learning Laboratory for the Life Sciences [ELLS] is an education facility which has been created to bring secondary school teachers into the research lab for a unique hands-on encounter with state-of-the-art molecular biology techniques and to give scientists a chance to work with teachers, helping to bridge the widening gap between research and schools.

eLearning (General Science)

Climate Lab
Climate Lab forms part of the National Marine Aquarium’s contribution to the EU-funded PENCIL project. This site is aimed at 9-14 year olds with core curriculum links to geography, science and citizenship. It’s a fun and interactive way of helping younger people appreciate the importance of reducing the effects of climate change before it’s too late. It aims to explain the pivotal role the oceans play in climate change, while simultaneously empowering individual students to take action to minimise the devastating effects of global warming. The site is also designed to be a teaching resource. Climate change can be used to teach geography, citizenship and science as well as ESD, numeracy and literacy. On this page, you will find a range of project ideas which use climate change as a spring board for discussion, investigation and learning. Each project idea is designed so you will have facts, ideas and resources at your fingertips when planning lessons.

ESA Education
The European Space Agency (ESA) Education Office coordinates all the education activities proposed by the various ESA Directorates and the Education Department itself. The aim is to help young Europeans, aged from 6 to 28, to gain and maintain an interest in science and technology by organising or informing them about various activities designed for their specific age group.

Science Center at School
SCIENCE CENTER? A science center is a place where you can discover the wonderful world of science and technology in a playful and entertaining way. The Science Center at School project is part of NEMO’s contribution to the EU-funded PENCIL project and challenges pupils to design and create their own exhibits. For now only the primary school project is available in English. The target group are pupils aged 11/12 years.

Xciters – Future science education
Welcome to all science students and teachers! Are you interested in science? Do you like to experiment? Do you like to teach others? Then Xciters is of interest to you. Three of the Xciters' teaching materials are also translated - a teacher's manual and two manuals for school students: Tips & Tricks for an Xciter and the Eye Manual. Xciters is a programme for seventh grade students (ages 13 and 14) developed by Experimentarium, Copenhagen, as part of the European PENCIL project. Xciters was inspired by the model of ‘learning by teaching,” or “peer-to-peer” teaching, often used in Danish schools when dealing with emotional topics. The approach allows young people to discuss complex subjects openly on a common level.

Eduspace Earth Observation for schools
The European Earth Observation Web Site for Secondary Schools: Would you like to see how Europe does look from space? Select the image of your home town and, with your school teachers' help, try to locate roads, rivers and other places with which you are familiar. You can also explore a satellite image covering the Alps or test your knowledge in a quiz. In 'Weather of Europe' you can make your own weather observations using a real-time Meteosat satellite image.

Eco Agent Department
The European Environment Agency has created a cool place for kids – The Eco Agent Department. There are fun games, missions, quizzes, as well as a score table listing the Top 10 Eco-Agents.

ELLS' TeachingBASE for the Life Sciences
The ELLS' TeachingBASE contains freely available teaching material linked to practical courses called LearningLABs, organised by the European Learning Laboratory for the Life Sciences [ELLS], where small international groups of 15-30 teachers have the opportunity to work side-by-side with top scientists in hands-on experiments, seminars, visits to EMBL facilities, bioinformatics, educational games, and a science and society discussion forum.

EU Science Education Media
This website specialises in presenting films on public funded European research in the areas of Genomics / Health and Food Safety. The films and the clips in the film catalogue are accompanied by background readings and an image library to facilitate creating teaching modules. In addition, the network section provides a possibility to consult experts if specific questions arise. The availability of these materials provides an easy introduction to recent research activities in life sciences.

EUROPA - Environment for Young Europeans
On the Environment for young Europeans website pupils can discover by themselves or together with friends and classmates what the environment is and what is happening to it. It focuses on four core themes which the European Union has decided to concentrate on for the next 10 years: air, water, waste and nature. The web sites includes also a Teacher’s Corner, fun games, an Eco-Quiz and a European Environmental Toolkit.

Flying Over Natura 2000 – Follow the migration of the Black Stork
“Flying Over Natura 2000” is an innovative project aimed at discovering the Natura 2000 network. You can follow the migration of the Black Stork as they undertake long journeys across Europe and their African wintering grounds and learn about the protected Natura 2000 sites. The birds’ movements can be followed thanks to a radio transmitter, which is attached to the storks like a mini backpack and relayed by satellites.

Online Journals

European Journal “Science in School”
Welcome to Science in School, the European journal to promote inspiring science teaching by encouraging communication between teachers, scientists and everyone else involved in European science education.

EU Contest for Young Scientists
The EU launched the Contest for Young Scientists back in 1989, with the aim of encouraging young people to get involved in science and eventually embark on a career in research.
Every year since then, young reseachers aged 14 to 21 from across Europe and beyond have gathered to present their work and compete for the top prizes. All of the entrants have already won prestigious science awards in their home countries, making this international contest one of the toughest competitions for young scientists in the world.

European Schoolnet
The gateway to education in Europe: European Schoolnet (EUN) is a unique not-for-profit consortium of 28 ministries of education in Europe created in 1997. EUN provides major European education portals for teaching, learning and collaboration and leads the way in bringing about change in schooling through the use of new technology.
