CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is one of the world’s largest and most respected centres for scientific research. Its business is fundamental physics, finding out what the Universe is made of and how it works.

EducaPoles - Educate, Inform, Demonstrate
EducaPoles is the International Polar Foundation's educational site.
It sets out to sensitize young people and the educational world to the importance of the Polar Regions and of climate change by proposing adapted teaching tools and projects.
Science Museums
Cité de l'Espace, France
La Cité de l’espace officially opened on 27th June 1997 with an exhibition covering an area of 2500 square metres. The exhibition consists of 200 units including hands-on displays, interactive terminals, software programs, and presentations. The centre covers 4 ha and features a full-scale replica of the Ariane 5 rocket, a Mir Station open to the public, and a hall devoted to audiovisual shows called Terr@dome. An IMAX cinema was opened in May 2005.
Città della Scienza, Italy
The SCIENCE CENTER "Città della Scienza" belongs to the new generation of Science museums and its main objective is to provide to the public, especially to young people and “outsiders”, fascinating science and technology experiences. Quality, cultural and scientific exactness, high educational value, clever fun and exciting communication, make the Science Centre the right place for an audience of every age and cultural level, where art, architecture and technology melt themselves in an innovative offer that stimulates the visitor’s curiosity.
Deutsches Museum, Germany
Of course the entire Deutsches Museum is a museum for children of all ages! But there are a few special nooks and corners for young people with an enquiring mind, for example the Technical Toys section with a fine collection of constructional toys. Or the Children’s World with 1001 exciting things: mechanical models and the water-wave-weir, a playground full of bricks, the long-laddered fire engine, the projector room with its coloured lights and shadows, or the giant guitar – it can get a bit loud there! If you want to find out the details, you’d better come along.
Experimentarium, Denmark
In our large Permanent Exhibition, you can experiment, play and touch with more than 300 different hand-on displays. You'll be using all of your senses when you dive in among the more than 300 different hands-on activities on offer at Experimentarium. At Experimentarium you'll find fun, games and food for thought for everyone from small children to adults of all ages. And don't forget to bring along an extra T-shirt, it can get very wet in and around the Children's Puddle!
Exploradome, France
Exploradome is a science and multimedia museum based in Paris. Fascinating experiences are proposed to children and their parents, as well as exhibitions and workshops for playful educational discoveries during the whole year.
Heureka Science Centre, Finland
Heureka's exhibitions are interactive. The main exhibition has over 200 exhibits from many fields of science as well as a number of activity points. It also offers programmes for school groups at every level, fabulous science shows suitable for visitors of all ages as well as the Childrens' Laboratory - a unique environment for kids to do experiments themselves.
Institute and Museum of the History of Science, Italy
The "Istituto e Museo di Storia della Scienza" (IMSS) is one of the foremost international institutions in the History of Science, combining a noted museum of scientific instruments and an institute dedicated to the research, documentation and dissemination of the history of science in the broadest senses. Educational on-line tools: Some of the most representative instruments held in the Museum are described in this series of applications. Videos, 3D reconstructions, interactive sections and original documents tell their history and explain how they work.
National Marine Aquarium, UK
The National Marine Aquarium is dedicated to raising awareness of the oceans, the challenges they face and the ways in which we can all help ensure they have a sustainable future. With a dedicated educational department made up of marine biologists, qualified teachers and a resident artist, the National Marine Aquarium has developed a reputation for excellence in informal education serving tens of thousands of school pupils each year.
NEMO Science Centre, Netherlands
NEMO is the largest science centre in the Netherlands. With five floors full of exciting things to do and discover, it is the perfect place for anyone with an inquiring mind. Everything in NEMO is connected to science and technology. Exhibitions, theatre performances, films, workshops and demonstrations. You will smell, hear, feel and see how the world works. After a visit to NEMO, you will know why bridges are so strong, what you will look like in 30 years, why you look so much like your parents, how to purify water, what happens when you kiss, how lightning and satellites work and much more. In other words, a day at NEMO is a pretty smart thing to do!

The Pavilion of Knowledge - Ciência Viva is an interactive science and technology museum that aims to make science accessible to all, stimulating experimentation and exploration of the physical world. The Pavilion of Knowledge - Ciência Viva is a special place where students can benefit from unique and often unforgettable experiences. The objective is to learn by having fun, to ask questions, present challenges, find explanations and, above all, to discover the pleasure of learning science in a lively way.
Technopolis, Belgium
Have you always wanted to put an airplane on the ground, sleep on a bed of nails, stand in the middle of a soap bubble or ride a bike 5 meters above the ground? In Technopolis, the Flemish science center in Mechelen, all of this is possible! Here you can experiment with more than 280 interactive exhibits. Fun, exciting and instructive!

European discoveries
From Archimedes to Einstein, Europe is the cradle of major scientific discoveries. European discoveries invites classes of pupils aged 8 to 14 to take part in compiling an encyclopaedia of Europe's major scientific discoveries and inventions, tracing the history of the foundation stones of modern science. With the help of numerous documents on the website, pupils are invited to produce in their classroom one of 12 discoveries and to communicate their results with other classrooms.

There is a full Moodle course on Earth in the Universe which won the Telefonica 02 award for mathematics and science in the 2007 eLearning Awards contest. This could be an excellent place where to start teaching Astronomy in schools.
ESA Kids – European Space Agency Website for Kids
The site is available in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Dutch. You will find puzzles, quizzes, animated comics and more. It's aimed at pupils aged up to 12 years old and includes exciting news about Cassini-Huygens' trip to the moon of Titan.

Scitable – A Collaborative Learning Space for Science
Scitable currently concentrates on genetics, the study of evolution, variation, and the rich complexity of living organisms. As you cultivate your understanding of modern genetics on Scitable, you will explore not only what we know about genetics and the ways it impacts our society, but also the data and evidence that supports our knowledge.
Teachers have the possibility to create a classroom group, to provide their students with an internet-based research space that includes evidence-based genetics resources, discussion threads, class memos, and more. Students are invited to ask questions to a number of knowledgeable experts. Also study packs are available, for example an introduction to genetics, or an introduction to biology - genetics section.
Sustain.no - Education for Sustainable Development
Sustain.no is an educational tool for sustainable development. The site includes activities complete with guidelines about how pupils can investigate, discuss and communicate their results. When the results are submitted to the network, they are made available for others to view.

2009: International Year of Astronomy
In 2009 the world celebrates the International Year of Astronomy to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Galileo's use of a telescope to study the night sky. 2009 is also the anniversary of many other important dates in the history of science, such as the publishing of Kepler's Astronomia Nova, Huygens' Systema Saturnium, and the first moon landing.
